Plants and Their Purposes in Gardening

There is a wide selection of ornamental plants, each good for various purposes to accentuate a garden. A little knowledge in gardening how-to can work wonders for a previously plain and green garden. Adding flowering shrubs and small flowering trees are great additions to your garden. Soft garden covers are great for marking which spots should not be stepped on.

Significant flowering ornamentals include Salvia nemorosa or the woodland sage, belonging to the same genus as related psychedelic plants like Salvia divinorum. Salvia nemorosa, however, does not contain alkaloids and is great for accentuating the garden, especially next to taller shrubs or small trees. It looks good near ferns or garden ponds.

Delphinium elatum is a very beautiful perennial plant with stalks of violet-blue flowers. This plant is as poisonous as it is beautiful. It is often confused with a nonrelated yet similar-looking plant called aconite, also known as monkshood or wolfsbane. In the Slavic regions, both these plants were traditionally used to ward off vampires, werewolves, and witches.

There are also ornamental plants that are selected for their leaves’ beautiful colors or shapes. The elephant ear plant is recognizable by its large heart-shaped leaves; these are placed in pots and moved outdoors or indoors. The caladium plant belongs to the same genus as the elephant ear; its heart-shaped leaves have striking red or white streaks. These plants belong in genus Alocasia that thrives across Asia, Australia, and South America.

It is a good gardening idea for homeowners to plant ground covers on certain areas in their yards. These little plants seem delicate, and children likely recognize that they must not harm these plants. Clovers make soft carpets that children may lay on when the plants have matured; these look good accompanied by shrubs like lilacs or purpleleaf sand cherry.

Lavender and candytuft are excellent for gardens because of their gentle appearance. Lavender is known for its medicinal and therapeutic properties; as an ornamental plant, it is relaxing to simply look at. It is the same with candytuft, a shrub covered with clusters of dainty white flowers that look like big cotton candy from afar. These flowers are suited for cool environments with gentle breeze and sun.
